This is a belated post about this years Celtic Challenge held at Frankfield Petanque Club.

First of all, thank you to everyone at Frankfield who helped out to make the weekend such a success!

Strong competition coupled with a social and friendly atmosphere combine to make the Celtic Challenge one of the highlights of the pétanque year. The Celtic Challenge is played over two days. Each nation supplies four teams of three or four players, with the host nation supplying an additional ‘B’ squad. The winner is the squad that achieves the most wins after 12 rounds (when each team has played all the other teams). The host nation’s ‘A’ and ‘B’ squads play each other in the first four rounds.

Going into the 2026 competition, the standings are as follows: Wales has won 14 times, Scotland 13 times, and Ireland 8 times.

The host for the 2027 Celtic Challenge is the Vale Petanque Club in Wales over the weekend of the 1st and 2nd May. Looking forward to another excellent competition and hope to see you all there!
